The Stamp Encore Contest has opened the vault — well, the stamp vault — and invited collectors and fans to revisit standout designs from the past few decades. Last summer, voters chose which of 25 fan favorites would be reprinted in 2026, and anticipation is building as the winning design will be revealed at the Boston 2026 World Expo in May.

Among the finalists are stamps featuring some of the most beloved characters in popular culture, including Disney’s magical heroes and villains, Pixar’s inventive storytellers, and the iconic droids of Star Wars. These selections highlight the artistry, humor, and emotional resonance that make a tiny stamp capable of capturing a big story.

Whether or not a particular issuance wins, the contest invites us to take another look at how memorable characters and moments can live on in miniature form.

A Little Sprinkling of Magic

Issued in 2007, the Art of Disney: Magic stamps explore the idea of magic as envisioned by Walt Disney and his studio animators. Drawing on classic Disney stories, the pane reflects a kind of magic rooted in imagination and the belief that extraordinary things can emerge from everyday moments.

The stamps bring together a cast of familiar characters whose stories transform simple moments into something remarkable. Dumbo discovers that soaring comes not from a magic feather but from believing in himself. Peter Pan and Tinker Bell show that faith, trust, and a bit of pixie dust can carry us to Never Land. Mickey Mouse, depicted as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” delights in wielding newfound powers, even as they slip beyond his control, while Aladdin learns that a true-blue friend can matter more than any wish.

These designs remind us that Disney magic is more than spells or spectacles. Its deeper meaning comes alive in the wonder, laughter, and hope these characters inspire in audiences of all ages.

Reaching Out with a Hello

Issued in 2011, the Send a Hello stamps feature Disney•Pixar characters drawn from films released between 1995 and 2009, stories centered on friendship, family, and the importance of reaching out. Building on the success of the Art of Disney stamp series, the issuance reflects Pixar Animation Studios’ ability to pair technological innovation with characters rooted in contemporary life rather than fairy tales or legends.

The pane features characters from some of Pixar’s most influential early films, uniting toys, race cars, rats, robots, and unlikely adventurers. Lightning McQueen learns the value of friendship, Remy helps Linguini find confidence, WALL•E discovers purpose without saying a word, and Carl and Dug form an unexpected bond. Each design emphasizes personal, direct connection, where a simple greeting can signal trust, offer help, or spark companionship.

By the time these stamps were issued, Pixar storytelling had firmly established itself as both technologically groundbreaking and emotionally resonant. The pane underscores that balance, using familiar characters to convey that even a small hello can carry significant meaning.

Spreading Cheer Through the Mail

Issued in 2012, the Mail a Smile stamps continue the Disney•Pixar story with characters from films exploring humor, emotion, and perseverance. As the second part of a two-issuance set following Send a Hello, the pane emphasizes Pixar’s technical ambition alongside its focus on the fears, foibles, victories, and joys of everyday life.

Featuring characters from A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles, the stamps highlight films that pushed animation into new territory. Pixar artists studied insect movement, underwater environments, fur, fabric, muscle, and hair to make ants, fish, monsters, toys, and superheroes feel expressive and believable. These advances served stories about unlikely heroes, from an anxious clownfish learning to let go and a family navigating identity and responsibility to friends finding strength in one another.

What unites the characters on the Mail a Smile stamps is their ability to lift spirits. Sulley and Mike balance work with unexpected tenderness, Woody and his friends demonstrate loyalty, and Flik and Dot offer encouragement. Paired with the act of sending mail, the designs reinforce that a thoughtful message, shared at the right moment, can brighten a day or ease a worry.

Villainous Style

Issued in 2017, the Disney Villains stamps celebrate the legacy of the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department, the behind-the-scenes artists whose work shaped some of animation’s most enduring antagonists. Long before digital tools entered the process, these highly specialized artists transformed animators’ pencil drawings into finished animation cels, recreating every line and expression by hand. The result is a gallery of villains whose visual presence is as carefully constructed as their on-screen personalities.

The pane brings together figures spanning more than half a century of Disney animation, from the Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Scar in The Lion King. Maleficent’s dramatic silhouette, Cruella De Vil’s striking contrast of black, white, and red, and Captain Hook’s theatrical flair demonstrate the precision and control required of Ink & Paint artists — steady hands, exacting focus, and an intuitive sense of color and movement. Even subtle details, like the Queen of Hearts’ bold palette or Lady Tremaine’s restrained elegance, reveal how much storytelling was embedded in every brushstroke.

The stamps also nod to a moment of transition in animation history. While films such as Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King introduced digital coloring, the villains Gaston and Scar appear here recreated using traditional ink and paint techniques, a deliberate return to the craft that defined earlier eras, preserving a tradition that continues to influence animation today.

Droids Across the Galaxy

The 2021 Star Wars Droids stamps turn the spotlight on mechanical figures that have shaped the saga since its very first moments. When audiences met C-3PO and R2-D2 in the opening scenes of Star Wars in 1977, these bickering, resourceful droids immediately stood apart from anything science fiction had offered before. From that point on, droids became essential companions, problem-solvers, and unlikely heroes across the galaxy.

The pane spans generations of storytelling, from the cautious diplomacy of C-3PO and the fearless improvisation of R2-D2 to newer standouts like BB-8, K-2SO, and L3-37. Each reflects a different moment in the evolution of the franchise, as well as the filmmaking techniques behind it. Early droids relied on costumed performers, puppetry, and practical effects, while later characters combine those traditions with motion capture and computer-generated imagery, advances that have made droids more expressive, mobile, and emotionally nuanced than ever.

Whether stranded on desert planets, assisting rebel missions, or asserting independence in a chaotic galaxy, these droids convey loyalty, humor, and ingenuity. Their scuffed surfaces and shopworn details reinforce the franchise’s “used universe,” grounding futuristic technology in something tactile and familiar. In doing so, Star Wars droids bridge fantasy and reality, embodying not just imaginative storytelling but decades of innovation inspired by a galaxy far, far away.

The Art of Disney Shines On

From soaring with the help of pixie dust to sharing a smile, witnessing a villain’s dramatic flair, or marveling at a droid’s ingenuity, these designs show how big stories can fit into small frames.

And that’s the appeal of the Stamp Encore Contest: It gives fans a chance to revisit stamps that make sending and receiving mail feel a little more personal, playful, and memorable. While the winner won’t be announced until May 2026, simply spending time with these stamps reminds us why fan-favorite characters continue to resonate, and how even the smallest gestures can carry a story worth celebrating.
