Hanukkah

The sweet simplicity of a hand-drawn hanukiah makes a great choice for your Hanukkah letters and cards. The lighting of the hanukiah, the menorah used exclusively at Hanukkah, is a central ritual of the annual celebration.

Art director and artist Antonio Alcalá decided to focus on this special aspect of the holiday as he thought about this stamp’s design. He first created an ink drawing using irregular lines to emphasize the more human side of the holiday, then completed the image by digitally adding blue to the stamp background and white to the hanukiah. The flames are rendered in yellow.

“I like how the design does not show the candles,” says Alcalá. “It implies them by the position of the menorah and the flames. To me, this unseen aspect of the art speaks to the quality of faith.”

Winter Landscapes

Satisfy your inner nature enthusiast with the bucolic Winter Landscapes stamps, featuring cold-weather scenes from around the country. Perfect for the season, these stamp images of snow-covered landscapes will add a definite pastoral charm to all your holiday mailings.

When photographer Carson O’Ffill saw a huge mass of icicles suspended against a backdrop of Lake Michigan and a breathtaking sunset, he knew he needed to get a shot. “A friend and I were exploring the frozen waves, walking along the top of them. We came across an area with many icicles, and hoping to capture them at sunset, I had my friend lower me down the wall onto the ice below. I managed to get down and capture the sun peeking through to complete the shot!”

“If the weather is cold enough, the waves of the lake form large ice walls,” O’Ffill says. “Some years they can reach 10 or more feet tall. The icicles you see are hanging off of one of those ice walls.”

Along with O’Ffill, photographers Mike Blottenberger, John Moore, Juanita Phillips, and Katherine Plessner provided the striking images featured in this booklet of 20 stamps.

Madonna and Child

For those seeking a more religiously themed stamp, a serene Madonna and Child might be the answer. First issued by the U.S. Postal Service in 2024, this lovely holiday stamp image comes from the workshop of the 17th-century Italian artist Giovanni Battista Salvi, called “Sassoferrato” (1609–1685). Salvi was born in the Italian town of Sassoferrato, from which he later acquired his nickname. Sassoferrato achieved success by emulating the work of earlier Renaissance artists, especially Raphael (1483–1520). Illustrations of the Madonna and Child were among Sassoferrato’s most popular portraits. He and his workshop produced many versions of this particular Madonna and Child; this one is from the collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.

Winter Whimsy

If a more geometric, modern look is your stamp preference, the Winter Whimsy stamps are an ideal choice with their lacy graphic forms inspired by snowflakes. A snowfall can deliver flakes by the trillions, quadrillions, or even quintillions, but each flake differs from all the others. Even in a whiteout blizzard, any one particle is a unique and magnificent marvel.

These fresh and fanciful stamps are perfect for any winter mailings.

Holiday Cheer

Looking for stamps that showcase the traditional holiday colors of red and green? Consider going with the Holiday Cheer issuance displaying four different contemporary collages by artist Denise Fiedler. Created with gouache and acrylic paint on background paper from a vintage gardening book, each of the stamp designs allows letters from the book pages to peek through red and green holiday images, with a splash of yellow.

Fiedler designed her art around a unifying theme: the natural world in winter. “Since most of my work is flora and fauna–centric, my inspiration for the stamp images was what nature presents us with during the holidays: amaryllis, holly, pine boughs, seasonal fruit, mistletoe, and cardinals for their beautiful red color.”

Holiday Joy

Using a bright, colorful palette, illustrator Michelle Muñoz channeled her love of Christmas, vintage ornaments, and Mexican folk art to create unique images of holiday décor. She especially took inspiration from the patterns typically seen on textiles, ornaments, and decorations found in traditional Mexican households. “I was exposed to vibrant colors and floral patterns that ultimately became part of my signature style.”

Festive and folk art–inspired, the Holiday Joy stamps are sure to enliven your holiday mailings.

Kwanzaa

The 2024 Kwanzaa stamps are a great choice for those looking for bold color and meaningful imagery celebrating and reaffirming African American culture.

Drawing on a variety of African traditions, Kwanzaa derives its name from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning “first fruits.” It has its origins in African first-harvest festivities that have been incorporated and reimagined in many of the communal traditions in today’s Kwanzaa celebrations.

Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamp with original artwork by Ekua Holmes, who took inspiration for her design from a live performance by dancers during a Kwanza celebration. “Their expressive, coordinated dance moves lifted, united, and excited the audience of all ages to stand up and cheer,” she recalls. “It left us in tears of pride and admiration.”

Snow Globes

Beloved by children and adults alike, snow globes can be miniature works of art, wacky souvenirs, or anything in between. Celebrate the spirit of the holidays with these playful Christmas stamps.

Snow globes share common features like the container, which is made of glass, plastic, or other clear materials, and filled with liquid that covers a central figure or scene. When shaken, the flitter, the technical term for the “snow,” creates a storm that obscures the inside of the container.

Holiday snow globes can feature Santa Claus, decorated trees, reindeer, elves, or other wintry subjects and are favorites among collectors.

Stamp artist Greg Manchess says, “I worked up tiny sketches that reflected my childhood love of Christmas time, then art director Derry Noyes and I talked them out. We wanted a range of subjects, so they could be enjoyed by everyone. I chose background colors based on the Christmas colors you see all around during the season.”

Winter Woodland Animals

The whimsical, graphic illustrations of four woodland animals in their winter habitats are perfect stamp choices for animal and nature lovers or anyone with a penchant for the lighter side.

Illustrator Katie Kirk digitally created the Winter Woodland Animal stamps using geometric shapes of bold, solid color. “I’ve always been drawn to animals and wildlife,” says Kirk. “It probably stems from growing up in a more rural area and having parents that passed on their love of nature and science to me. My work focuses on simplifying the form, so I think I also enjoy the challenge.”
