About This Stamp

This Liberty issue stamp depicts John Marshall. He was born in the colony of Virginia in 1755. He was selected as a delegate to the Virginia Ratifying Convention, which was created to ratify or reject the proposed United States Constitution. As a Federalist, Marshall was in favor of ratification. Marshall served in the United States House of Representatives. He was appointed to Secretary of State, and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, under President John Adams. He helped to establish the concept of judicial review Supreme Court’s role as the final authority on the meaning of the Constitution. Marshall served as Chief Justice during all or part of the administrations of six Presidents.
