In the United States, winter begins at the winter solstice, the day of the year with the shortest period of daylight, usually December 21 or 22. But in some parts of the country, snow begins falling and temperatures plummet long before the solstice. Winter is not only a season but also a state of mind.

Even a dusting of snow can transform everyday sights into enchanting snowscapes. The new Winter Landscapes stamps from the U.S. Postal Service showcase a few of these beautiful scenes: a cozy home surrounded by frosty pines; a stand of snow-covered evergreen trees; giant icicles suspended against a fiery sunset; snowy footprints alongside an old, wooden fence; and two bright red barns surrounded by snow.

"These scenes reflect diverse landscapes,” art director Ethel Kessler explains. “From frozen lakes under moody skies to ice curtains suspended against fiery sunsets, they all evoke a sense of wonder.”

Winter Landscapes stamps are now available for purchase, both online and in Post Office locations nationwide.
