About This Stamp

A 20-cent commemorative stamp featuring Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts was issued September 1, 1982, in Vienna, Virginia. The First Day of Issue ceremony was held at the Park.

Wolf Trap Farm Park was opened in 1971 as a new concept in the National Park system — a theatre in wooded surroundings where a wide variety of musical events could be presented. The stamp's design captures a familiar Wolf Trap scene of an audience on a grassy knoll looking down toward the stage in the background. At the lower right is the Wolf Trap logo, a stylized wolf's head.

The Wolf Trap stamp was the first issue in a new series of stamps drawing attention to Cultural Attractions of the National Capital. The series was intended to give recognition to the cultural excellence found in and around the national capital area.

The designer of the stamp was Richard Schlecht of Arlington, Virginia, and the modeler was Ronald C. Sharpe. The stamp was printed in the photogravure process, with 50 stamps per pane.
