About This Stamp
This Senator Taft Memorial stamp features a portrait of Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio. He was the son of the 27th President and 10th Chief Justice of the United States, William Howard Taft. He served in the Ohio House of Representatives and then later the State Senate. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1938 and served three terms. He was a conservative politician, nicknamed “Mr. Republican,” and a critic of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 1940, 1948, and 1952.
