About This Stamp
A 10-cent regular stamp honoring Senator Richard Brevard Russell was issued May 31, 1984, in Winder, Georgia, his birthplace. The First Day of Issue ceremony was held in Fort Yargo State Park.
Richard Russell was born on November 2, 1897, the son of a Georgia supreme court justice. He entered the world of public service in 1921 in the Georgia Assembly, and in 1930 he became the youngest governor in Georgia's history. In 1933, he was elected to the United States Senate, becoming its youngest member. He was re-elected to the Senate six times and nominated for president at the 1948 and 1952 Democratic National Conventions. Russell died in 1971, at the age of 73.
The design of the stamp features a full-face view of Senator Russell. Richard Sparks of Norwalk, Connecticut, designed the stamp. It was printed in the intaglio process and issued in panes of 100. The art director and typographer was Howard Paine; modeler was Ronald C. Sharpe; engravers were Kenneth Kipperman (vignette) and Thomas J. Bakos (lettering and numerals).
