About This Stamp
A 20-cent stamp honoring Dr. Ralph Bunche was issued January 12, 1982, in New York, New York. The First Day of Issue ceremony was held at the United Nations.
Dr. Bunche, an American political scientist, government official, and United Nations official, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950 for mediating the Palestine conflict between Israel and the Arab nations in 1949.
The stamp was in the new Great Americans series, which began in 1980 with a stamp honoring Sequoyah and continued in 1981 with issues honoring George Mason, Rachel Carson, and Dr. Charles Drew. This new series of regular stamps gradually replaced the American series.
Jim Sharpe of Westport, Connecticut, designed the stamp. It was printed in the intaglio process and issued in panes of 100. The modeler was Clarence Holbert; engravers were Kenneth Kipperman (vignette) and Gary J. Slaght (lettering & numerals).
