About This Stamp
This Pure Food and Drug Laws stamp features a portrait of Harvey Washington Wiley and commemorates the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act. The law outlawed interstate transportation of adulterated or misbranded foods and drugs and required that active ingredients be placed on the packaging. Wiley, Chief Chemist at the United States Department of Agriculture from 1882 to 1912, was instrumental in the passage of the law.
