About This Stamp

The USPS hired John Gurche for the 1989 Prehistoric Animals stamps, featuring several dinosaurs. Prior to the stamps, he’d painted the creatures for books and magazines as well as murals for the National Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution. Gurche made repeated visits to the fossilized bones at the Smithsonian museums to get his images just right, and he even created clay models of each creature before painting.
