New York World’s Fair

This New York World’s Fair stamp commemorates the opening of the New York World’s Fair in New York City on April 22, 1964. This was the third world’s fair to be hosted in New York City. The stamp features an image of the fair’s main pavilion area in Flushing Meadows – Corona Park, in Flushing, Queens, New York, with two sculptures created for the fair to celebrate the beginning of the space age. The Unisphere is a 12-story-high, spherical stainless steel representation of the Earth; it was designed by Gilmore D. Clarke and constructed by the American Bridge Company. The Rocket Thrower, created by Donald De Lue, is a bronze sculpture of a god-like man throwing a rocket into the air and reaching for a constellation of stars.
