About This Stamp
This Liberty issue stamp depicts Mount Vernon, located near Alexandria, Virginia, the plantation home of the first President of the United States, George Washington. Washington inherited Mt. Vernon from his half-brother Lawrence Washington, who had named the estate after Admiral Edward Vernon. After his presidency, Washington retired to Mt. Vernon. The stamp features an image of the east façade of the main house, which faces the Potomac River. The property is now a National Historic Site.
