About This Stamp
This Liberty issue stamp depicts John Jay, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He was born in New York City, New York, in 1745. During the American Revolutionary War, Jay served as a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses. He was later appointed as Minister to Spain. In 1782, Jay assisted Benjamin Franklin and John Adams with peace negotiations in Paris to end the American Revolutionary War. He was one of the authors of the Federalist Papers. He was the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, nominated by President George Washington. He went on to serve as the Governor of New York between 1795 and 1801.
