About This Stamp
This James Monroe stamp features the fifth President of the United States. Jefferson is one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He was born in the colony of Virginia in 1758. Monroe served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He held elected positions with the Virginia House of Delegates, Continental Congress, U.S. Senate, and as governor of Virginia. He was appointed as Minister of France in 1794; he played a key role in the negotiation of the Louisiana Purchase. Monroe was elected to two terms as President of the United States, running unopposed during his second term in 1820. His most famous contribution to foreign policy was the Monroe Doctrine, which viewed European efforts to interfere with the colonies in North and South America as acts of aggression, requiring U.S. intervention.
