About This Stamp
The 22-cent commemorative stamp focusing attention on the plight of the world's hungry was issued in Washington, D.C., on October 15, 1985, one day prior to "World Food Day." The First Day of Issue ceremony was held at the Rayburn House office building.
At the time of the stamps issuance, the United Nations estimated that malnutrition affected more than 500 million people worldwide. In Africa alone, more than 150 million children and adults were at risk of starving to death.
In an effort to end this worldwide problem, organizations such as the Peace Corps and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) initiated comprehensive programs to reduce food and crop losses from disease and pests, increase the industrial production of foods, and establish and expand modern agricultural methods.
The stamp was designed by Jerry Pinkney of Croton-on-Hudson, New York. Art director was Jack Williams, manager for philatelic design; typographer was Bradbury Thompson of Riverside, Connecticut; modeler was Richard C. Sennett, American Bank Note Company. The gravure process was used. The stamps were issued in panes of 50.
