About This Stamp
A 20-cent commemorative stamp recognizing the significant contributions to society made by the field of health research was issued May 17, 1984, in New York City. The First Day of Issue ceremony was held at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in conjunction with its centennial anniversary.
Dedicated health research professionals have made giant steps toward the development of technical and medical innovations that prevent disease and prolong life. Their long hours of experiment and study allow people to enjoy healthier and longer lives.
The Health Research stamp depicts a variety of laboratory paraphernalia used by health research technicians. It was produced by the American Bank Note Company. The plate number is preceded by the letter "A," as were all the plate numbers of stamps printed since 1979 by private companies under contract with the U.S. Postal Service.
The stamp was designed by Tyler Smith of Tiverton, Rhode Island, and modeled by Richard C. Sennet. The stamp was printed in the photogravure process, with 50 stamps per pane.
