George Rogers Clark

The George Rogers Clark issue of February 25, 1929, commemorated the 150th anniversary of the surrender by the British of Fort Sackville at Vincennes, Indiana (1779). Clark's victory paved the way for the U.S. conquest of the Northwest Territory, resulting in the western boundary of the U.S. being extended to the Mississippi River by the Treaty of Paris (1783). The issue consists of a single 2-cent stamp in extra large format with red border and black vignette. Frederick C. Yohn's painting Surrender of Fort Sackville inspired the stamp's central design.
