About This Stamp
This Gardening Horticulture stamp honors the garden clubs of America in connection with the centennial of the birth of horticulturist Liberty Hyde Bailey. Bailey was born in Michigan in 1858. He studied at the Michigan Agricultural College and later went on to found the New York State College of Agriculture and co-founded the American Society for Horticultural Science. The stamp features an allegorical image of the “bountiful earth,” a woman holding a horn of plenty surrounded by flowers and fruits.
