About This Stamp

A 20-cent commemorative stamp honoring Franklin Delano Roosevelt was issued on the 100th anniversary of his birth, January 30, 1982, at his birthplace, Hyde Park, New York. The First Day of Issue ceremony was held at the Roosevelt estate, where he and his wife, Eleanor, are buried.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States. He took office in March 1933 and served until his death in 1945. He was the only U.S. president to be elected four times, and he died while in office, less than a month before the end of World War II.

The stamp was based on a UPI photograph of the late president in his touring car taking reporters to see tree plantings at Hyde Park on July 4, 1937. The designer and modeler was Clarence Holbert of the Bureau of Printing and Engraving.

The stamp was printed in the intaglio process and printed in panes of 48.
