About This Stamp

A 20-cent coil stamp featuring an 1860-era fire pumper was issued December 10, 1981, in Alexandria, Virginia. No First Day of Issue ceremony was held.

The stamp was the third in the new Transportation series which was initiated in 1981 with the Surrey with the Fringe on Top and the Electric Auto stamps. All stamps in this series featured early modes of transportation and were issued in coil form only.

The artist, James Schleyer, of Burke, Virginia, based his design on a photograph of a fire pumper, which was owned by Engine Company Four in Alexandria, Virginia.

The stamp was issued in coils if 100, 500 and 3,000. Modeler was Clarence Holbert; engravers were Kenneth Kipperman (vignette) and Robert G. Culin, Sr. (lettering and numerals).
