About This Stamp

The 15-cent Everett Dirksen commemorative stamp was issued at Pekin, Illinois, on January 4, 1981, anniversary of the longtime political leader's birth.

Everett Dirksen (1896–1969) was born in 1896 in Pekin, Illinois. Though he remained a conservative Republican throughout his political career, Dirksen played a crucial role in establishing major liberal legislations in the 1960s: the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, the Civil Rights Act, and the Voting Rights Act. Dirksen was elected minority leader of the Senate in 1959 and served until his death in 1969.

The stamp was designed by Ron Adair and engraved through the intaglio process.
