About This Stamp
This Emancipation Proclamation stamp commemorates the centennial of President Abraham Lincoln’s executive order that declared the freedom of slaves — nearly three million — residing in territories in rebellion. The Proclamation represented a shift in the war objectives of the North: reuniting the nation was no longer the only goal. It also promoted the ultimate abolition of slavery in the United States. The stamp features an image of a broken, or severed, chain.
