About This Stamp
The Postal Service honored aerospace scientist Dr. Theodore von Karman with a commemorative stamp issued August 31, 1992, in Washington, D.C.
Dr. von Karman is credited with establishing the Center for Rocket Research that is now the Jet Propulsion laboratory at the California Institute of Technology. Throughout his career as a scientist, engineer, and professor, he exerted enormous influence on the scientific and technological development of the United States' aviation and aerospace industry. He pioneered many of the principles of aerodynamics that were instrumental in the development of the U.S. space program and the landing of Apollo 11 on the moon. In 1963, President John Kennedy presented Dr. von Karman with the first National Medal of Science.
The stamp was designed by Chris Calle of Ridgefield, Connecticut, and issued in a pane of 50. Stamp Venturers, Inc., manufactured the stamps in the gravure process.
