About This Stamp
A 20-cent commemorative stamp honoring American silent film star Douglas Fairbanks was issued May 23, 1984, in Denver, Colorado, his birthplace. The First Day of Issue ceremony marking the centennial of Fairbanks' birth was held at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. The stamp was designed by Jim Sharpe of Westport, Connecticut, and modeled by Frank J. Waslick.
Douglas Fairbanks, an actor, writer, and producer, was one of the most famous film personalities of the silent era. He appeared in more than 40 films, mostly light comedies and swashbuckling adventures. His exuberance, good looks, and love of adventure captured the hearts of millions of fans around the world.
The stamp, which is the latest addition to the Performing Arts series, features Fairbanks as he appeared in two of the films that made him a cinematic legend — The Thief of Bagdad and The Three Musketeers.
The stamp was printed in the intaglio/photogravure process and issued in panes of 50.
