About This Stamp
The Postal Service joined the American Association for World Health, the Centers for Disease Control, and The Points of Light Foundation in raising awareness about AIDS with the issuance of a commemorative stamp on December 1, 1993, in Washington, D.C. This issuance was in conjunction with World AIDS Day, a day observed internationally each year on December 1. World AIDS Day is an organized effort designed to provide education and awareness on issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.
The AIDS Awareness stamps were available nationwide in booklets of 10 and sheets of 50. In addition to the issuance of the stamp in Washington, post offices throughout the nation participated in local AIDS Awareness stamp ceremonies and offered special World AIDS Day pictorial cancellations.
The stamp featured a red ribbon that symbolizes compassion and awareness. Designed by artist Tom Mann of Warrenton, Virginia, the stamps were printed in the photogravure process by Stamp Venturers, Inc.
