Today, the United States Postal Service celebrates the birthday of Martha Washington (1731–1802), a pioneering figure in American history. As the nation's first first lady and a steadfast supporter of the Revolutionary cause, she played a pivotal role in shaping the United States at its inception.

During the Revolutionary War, while spending a hard winter in the Continental Army’s encampment at Valley Forge, New York, with her husband, Martha Washington helped organize supplies, rolled bandages, and led women in their work around camp. She is credited for boosting the soldiers’ morale through her steady work.

As first lady, she was known for hosting salons that brought together assorted groups of people including political adversaries, foreign dignitaries, and women and men from the local community. These gatherings helped set a precedent of generosity and accessibility for future first ladies to follow.

The 1902 eight-cent Martha Washington stamp was also a historic first: It was the first U.S. postage stamp ever to feature an American woman. Her dignified portrait, framed by classic engraving, remains a symbol of the important role she played in early American history.

On this special day, we invite you to reflect on Martha Washington’s enduring legacy and the significance of her presence in philatelic history. Join us in celebrating this timeless tribute to an American icon. Happy birthday, Martha Washington!
